About the Study

Fair Lawn is planning for the future of its neighborhoods. The Transit-Oriented Communities Plan will produce plans focused on the Broadway and Radburn train station areas. Each plan will examine how land use and transportation can work together to create safe, walkable, connected places around transit to improve the quality of life for Fair Lawn community members.

What We’re Studying

The plan will look at the many factors that shape each train station area.

Getting Around - How people get to and from the Broadway and Radburn train stations by train, bus, car, foot, and bike.

Walking & Biking - Where walking and biking could be safer, easier, and more comfortable.

Homes, Businesses and New Development - How homes, businesses, and future development can help create active, attractive areas around the train stations.

Parking - How parking is used today and whether there are ways to make parking work better as the area changes.

Environment - How flooding, drainage, extreme heat, and other environmental concerns may affect the area.

Policies and Future Planning - Whether Fair Lawn's current policies and plans support the kind of safe, walkable, transit-friendly community residents want.

The study will not approve specific development projects. Instead, it will provide a planning framework and recommendations for the Borough to consider.

Why Should Fair Lawn Be a Transit-Oriented Community?

Fair Lawn has an opportunity to build on the strengths of its train stations and create places where people can more easily walk, bike, take transit, and reach homes, businesses, and community destinations. As a transit-oriented community Fair Lawn can make better use of its existing transportation network, support local businesses, provide more housing choices, and create safer, more connected neighborhoods around its train stations.

As part of this plan, the Broadway and Radburn train stations will be evaluated to identify opportunities to make them more walkable, connected, and welcoming. This study will also assess Fair Lawn’s readiness for the New Jersey Transit Village Initiative and identify steps the Borough could take to prepare for the State’s program.
